RENATE FERRO

CRITICAL RESEARCH

My artistic practice involves critical interactivity incorporating emerging technologies with the social and theoretical structures of the psychological and sociological condition.  Central to my practice is the translation of analog technology (print, super 8 film, television) into new digital media.  The juxtaposition between the old and the new within the architectural installation space provides an “in-between” trajectory where the viewer's body traverses the material space to discover digital realms of light, sound, and motion sensors to uncover the layered paradigms of the personal and the political. Combining material with immaterial elements is key in most of my projects where the physical body and sculptural elements are presented in the midst of light, sound, and movement. By integrating sensor technology in this mix the viewer’s capability to interact with the installation becomes dynamic.

My newest work intersects the material spaces of installation and public space with interactive-based web works identifited by writer Norie Neumark as uncertain practices, the notion of the existance of the site of the work existing in both reality and virtuality is at the basis of my most recent research and creativity.

Additionally, I also produce work in digital photography, conceptual drawing/printmaking and artist’s books that trace or map work to extend it in the preliminary phases or as documentation.
